"Look, I'm sorry about what happened..." Jeff muttered to himself as he walked through the park with the urn of his mother's ashes. "Look, I'm really sorry that I..." He couldn't quite find the right words to say to his sister, Megan, when they met. He rounded the winding path and there she sat, waiting, on the bench their parents had their first kiss on all those years ago.
"You're late..." she grumbled out.
"I...you...look like you're doing well," he replied, hugging he urn close to him.
"I had to come straight from work. I have to wear shit like this...my boss is a pig but it's the best paying job I could get," she curtly explained. "I was supposed to be a big shot lawyer by now, but you had to happen... So an AA I am..."
"Look, it's been 10 years," Jeff, getting defensive, cut-in. "I've adjusted, it's about time you do too..."
Megan just stared at him with a piercing glare. "Must be a lot easier being a lawyer...and a guy..." she countered.
"What do you want me to say that I haven't already? What I did was stupid, dumb, reckless...but it affected us both!" Jeff shouted. "Get some fucking therapy or something!"
"You swapped our bodies without asking so I'd take a test for you and got us stuck! I'm a woman C-student who could only get into community college! You took my manhood and my life! And I did get a therapist, but I couldn't exactly tell the whole story, now could I!?" she fired back. They both glanced around to make sure no one else was within earshot. "Let's just spread mom's ashes and then we never need to see eachother again..." she continued.
"Mom wanted nothing more than for us to get past this. She hated not being able to visit with us both at the same time..." Jeff began.
"She kept the spellbook you recklessly used, this is partly her fault too," she fired back. "And you know what, it affected us both, but not equally. You took to being a guy real quick...you fucked my girlfriend before we were even sure it was permanent!"
"Oh, she was ready for it, I just knew what buttons to push from being a girl myself," Jeff responded.
"And I'm still curious as to how you got through law school. Who did you swap with to pass those tests for you?" she asked piercingly.
"No one, I worked hard for that!" he shouted while gesturing, knocking the lid off of the urn and causing it to shatter on the pavement below. "I think that may be mom telling us to break it up..."
Megan sighed and stood up, adjusting her jacket to cover herself as much as it would. "Yelling and fighting isn't going to fix this... We're still stuck. For mom's sake, let's just stop it and get this done."
Jeff nodded and each sibling took one side of the urn. "Rest in peace, mom. Say hi to dad for us..." Megan called out as they dumped the ashes behind the bench.
"Look, uh..." Jeff began as Megan started to walk away. "The law office I work at has a paralegal opening. I know it's not exactly the same, but you'd get to work with lawyers in a more professional, less piggish environment. And we have a program that will pay for you to go to law school...so uh..."
Megan turned and looked up at him, her expression softening. "You serious?" she asked. He nodded. She sighed and looked around, pondering. "I promised mom I would...try with you...and I do really want to get out of my current job...." she trailed off as she looked down at what she was wearing. "Yeah, fine, send me the link..."
